Contemporary art often plays with the tension between private and public, exhibiting as “product” the most intimate emotions: a (sometimes) refined variation on the most common marketing ploy of all. Marzia Gallinaro acknowledges this specific aspect of the Pocket Gallery and makes it her own: an art gallery is a public viewing space; but when it’s hidden…?...down there, in your pocket…? It becomes a symmetrical mirror of the tendency of contemporary are to trumpet private sentiment in public. She pokes fun at those who become voyeurs under cover of culture, and who slip into small private places (art galleries?) like pre-teens to peek at dirty pictures. Her nervous line drawing which smacks of graffiti (another public venue for private eroticism) creates a tension well suited to the paranoia (of lots of guys) at having to use a magnifying glass or a ruler… the gallery isn’t the only place where size matters. .

Con una battuta celebre, Sophie Tucker rende la più intima delle situazione un icona culturale mondiale. L’arte contemporanea gioca spesso sulla tensione tra privato e publico, esponendo come prodotto i sentimenti privati: una variante (a volte) raffinata del marketing più commune. Marzia Gallinaro riconosce questo elemento specifico nella Pocket Gallery e nè fa proprio: una galleria d’arte sarrebbe uno spazio pubblico; ma quando viene nascosta...?...in tasca...laggiù...? Fa uno specchio simmetrico ed opposto alla tendenza dell’arte contemporaneo a sbattere il privato in pubblico. A modo suo sbeffeggia chi, sotto guisa di cultura fa del voyeurismo, ritirandosi, come da preadolescente in un ambiente nascosta per guardare figurine erotiche. Con un tratto nervoso, da graffitti (altro mezzo publico per esporre erotismi privati) crea una tensione che combina bene con la paranoia (di tanti maschi) di dover affrontare la questione con una lente di ingrandimento... non solo nella galleria la grandezza conta qualcosa.
